Have you noticed that almost everyone’s home looks alike? People have the same carpet, the same tile or stone (in the same colors), the same vinyls (again in the same colors). Yet, with a little imagination and with most of the same products, a truly custom floor can be designed to fit anyone’s home and personality.

Whether a geometric design pleases your eye, or, something abstract is what grabs your attention, most carpets, tiles, vinyls, and linoleum offer a comprehensive color palette for you to design with. Combine, intertwine, create, explore. Make your home yours, and yours alone. Express your uniqueness, your personality. Too many of us are willing to be the cookies in a cookie cutter society.

You are an individual. You are unique! Express that!!!

Consider some examples:

The above example shows an abstract design in a small kitchen. This client wanted an abstract ‘pathway’ from door to doorway. The washer and dryer sit on the ‘teardrop’ area. This client did not have a definite pattern in mind, together we brain stormed until she was pleased with the final sketch.

The following shows another abstract in a “Moxie Java” coffee bistro in Boise Idaho. In this case the client drew her design on the floor and was very exacting in the proper placement of the curves.

And finally we have a geometric design, again designed by the client. She found her idea in an architectural magazine and modified to fit her kitchen and dinette area. Her scaled design was easily transferred much to her delight.

All of the above examples were installed using Marmoleum. However, almost any floorcovering can be a creative adventure.

So have fun, play, and express yourself!

In late 2009, this custom Marmoleum floor was commissioned to be installed in a kitchen/dinette and stairwell. The home was built in the mid 1950′s, and has a very old set of concrete stairs that was to be installed with Marmoleum, coved with a clean looking retro “scribe to” stair nosing. The stairs required a significant amount of preparation, as can be seen in the “before” pictures. The homeowners/clients demonstrated extraordinary patience with the processes required to complete this custom installation in a manner that will be enjoyed for years to come.

The dance steps are for the Tango. They were designed, proportioned and positioned by the homeowner.

The actual steps were cut out prior to installation, as were the arrowheads. The lines of the arrows were heat welded with Marmoleum camouflage welding rod.

Most of the installation process has been documented.

Please enjoy scrolling through the documentation.

This is the type of project that I especially enjoy crafting and sharing the clients surprise of and satisfaction with the end result. This is because they rely on me to interpret their palette, their custom design, and a piece of themselves that they are imprinting on/in their home and the lives of those who they hospitably invite into their kitchen.

Last May, I was commissioned by the producers of a Green Exposition to fabricate an area rug made from Marmoleum. Forbo, the manufacturer of some of the finest linoleum products on the planet, was to donate materials and the design was inspired by an Art-Deco-ish upholstery fabric. The project took 25 hours to complete, using 9 different colors and over 100 separate inset and border pieces.

I started with a piece of ¼” Luan plywood about 4 x 6’3″. Then I glued a piece of ½” plywood in the middle, surrounded by wedges of wood designed for use under carpet (for ramping to a transition). So, there is a taper from ½” to zero all the way around the base. I used hardwood flooring adhesive to laminate the pieces together. Then I stapled it for added security and ground the extended points off the back and underside of the base. At the edges, the base is about ⅜” thick (quarter-inch luan, and eighth-inch Marmoleum).

The design of the fabric was transfered, with a little artistic editing, to paper. Marmoleum pieces were formed and fitted and the Forbo area rug began to take shape. The lino rug was featured and walked on at the exposition and now resides in a local Boise floor covering store. I hope you enjoy the slide-show below that chronicles the fabrication of a Marmoleum area rug.
[[Show as slideshow]]
